[Introduction]
Beginning from the post-volcanic landscape of Jeju, this lecture performance moves across different time scales, following traces that persist beyond the event: lava becoming forest (tree-ing), humidity carried through porous stone (in-filtrating), collapse turning into shelter (un-making), and violence remaining within the land (re-membering). It passes through the thresholds between surface and underground, body and landscape, visibility and disappearance, tracing how breath, voice, vegetation, and geological matter continuously affect one another through ongoing changing material persistence. The work lingers with what continues to shape the present without ever becoming fully visible.
The choreographers Su-Mi Jang (Seoul) and Miriam Jakob (Berlin) conducted field research in Jeju in June and continued their work during a four-week residency at Uferstudios in Berlin in July and August. Moving between these shifting contexts, they continue their research in the form of a lecture performance in Seoul.

Sumi Jang_
Su-Mi Jang(she/they) is a choreographer, performer and artist researcher based in Berlin and Seoul. Their work investigates affect, embodiment, and bodies relation to invisible, collective, and post-natural forces. Working across choreography, voice, and Jang explores vulnerability, proximity, and modes of unlearning. Their long-term research into SCREAM as a relational and political practice has informed works such as scream es-say(2017), Dead-body Being(2018), and Queering Voice(2021).
Jang studied MA choreography at Folkwang University Essen(DE) and DAS Choreography in Amsterdam(NL). Their works have been presented internationally at venues and festivals including Theater Freiburg, Uferstudios Berlin, Theater Spektakel Zurich, Seoul Performing Arts Festival, DMZ Festival, and Frieze Live.
Miriam Jakob_
Miriam Jakob is a choreographer, performer, and artist researcher based in Berlin. Her work explores the porous boundaries between science and fiction, focusing on questions of perception, accessibility, and interspecies communication. Working across choreography, film, installation, and collaborative performance, she investigates how bodies(human and more-than-human) relate through resonance, uncertainty, and embodied form of listening.
Jakob’s artistic research often unfolds in transdisciplinary collaborations that connect art, science, and embodied knowledge. Her long-term inquiry into breath and relationality has been shaped by collaborations within the Berlin Artistic Research Programme and by her ongoing training in breath therapy inspired by the perceptible Breath Method of Ilse Middendorf. She studied choreography at DAS Choreography in Amsterdam and holds degrees in Dance, Context, Choreography (BA), and Anthropology (MA).

[In Conversation with the Festival]
Following the land of Jeju is not a journey towards an answer that is already known. The body stays with the land for a long time, tracing the topography and flora left behind by the volcano. Only through this process does one encounter the traces and times that gradually reveal themselves, allowing the landscape to be read through subtly shifting textures.
In the crevices of volcanic rocks, the bodies of air and water droplets tree / following trails of the infiltrating shes is a lecture performance based on the research Sumi Jang and Miriam Jakob have continued between Jeju and Berlin. It explores ways of translating into the language of performance the sensations met by the body as it walks, breathes, and lingers.
The festival follows these shifting senses, as time and space, memory and matter, and life itself intertwine and scatter into one another.

Scatter, as All Things Entangle
The 2026 Seoul Marginal Theatre Festival imagines encounters between different temporalities. From the margins, we question other movements that reveal cycles and interweavings, and the processes of transformation that oscillate between the defined and the undefined.
