Pina Bausch is without doubt one of the greatest artists of the 21st century. We are still holding on to memories of this master, who expressed the fundamental human emotions and desires by creating a deep resonance through her inventive style that crossed over boundaries of dance and theater. The company has returned to Korea with “Sweet Mambo”, one of the final works of Pina Bausch premiered in Wuppertal in May 2008, a year before her death.
Pina Bausch created “Sweet Mambo” entirely for her company, portraying the distinctive characteristics of the dancers she has worked together with for a long time and the deep affection she feels towards each one of them. This makes the work the more special for the company. Various human emotions stretching from happiness, sorrow, and misery as well as the relationship between men and women, fighting, seducing, swaying, and abandoning each other are explored in the inimitable style of Pina Bausch, sculpting the essence of her artistry. With white drapes cast over the stage swaying as the background, various solo and ensemble movements and the humorous, life-affirming scenes reveal a beautiful and bold collage of ever-changing images that oscillate between the real and the surreal. Perhaps it is a great fortune for all of us who have lived as contemporaries of Pina Bausch to still be able to meet works that hold memories of this greatest master.
