Changing the classical music scene in Korea
Ensemble DITTO begins its second era

“Why is it that we don’t have young audience members in classical music concerts and what can we do to have them come?” This question was the beginning of DITTO 10 years ago. With this question, DITTO started making a search for audience members themselves. To invite those less familiar with classical music to concert halls, DITTO tried out untraditional ideas and diverse repertoire to carry out their mission.

And the fans have responded to DITTO’s efforts wholeheartedly. The fans from the past decade are not one-time audiences; they have become classical music lovers and have joined DITTO on their journey of music. With their support, DITTO will take another leap forward during the 10th Anniversary Festival. DITTO has reminded themselves of their original intention which was to play the kind of classical music that the audience wants to listen to, and to let the world know about chamber music which is considered a non-mainstream genre. They will also try to repay the fans for their passionate support during the past decade.

For the new DITTO, young artists have been invited to join the team this year. The new artists include the irresistible violinist Yu-Chien Tseng, second prize winner of the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition (no first prize was awarded), cellist Taeguk Mun, first Korean to win the Pablo Casals International Cello Competition, violinist Danny Koo, who freely communicates with the audience and adds a unique and bright energy to the ensemble, and clarinetist Han Kim, winner of the Jacques Lancelot 2016 Clarinet Competition.

DITTO will continue to stand at the forefront with hopes of sharing classical music with more people. As the essence of an ensemble is to listen to the musician surrounding you and not just play for the sake of making oneself be heard, special attention should be taken on how the new DITTO communicates with the audience through their music.

DITTO’s golden days begin now.
