The Bittersweet Revenge of a Fairy
In the world of classical ballet, is the epitome of frail feminine beauty.
For instance, Act 2, with ballerinas in pure white romantic tutus under dreamy-blue moonlight, is enough to haunt viewers with its vision of fairies in a surreal land.
In Act 1, Giselle falls in love with a boy named Loys at a wine festival in a country vineyard along the Rhine River on a balmy day.
But Loys, disguised as a peasant, is in reality Albrecht, a nobleman engaged to someone else. When Giselle makes this discovery, she goes insane and dies of a broken heart.
The mysterious haunting dances in Act 2 are performed by wilis, the ghosts of maidens who have died like Giselle and are exacting their revenge on their betrayers.
This ballet, despite its frightful theme, has been synonymous with romantic ballet since its premiere in 1841.
And ever since its premiere in 1975, by the Korea National Ballet, has also been one of the most popular productions in Korea.
