Celebrating the music of Michel Legrand
One of the most respected jazz vocalists of our time, Buyoung Lee has made her 5th album dedicated to one of the greatest French film/musical composers of our time, Michel Legrand. This album was hailed by many jazz fans and critics as one of the best albums of all time and received great many reviews. Voice of People has commented that the music of this album “allows listeners to look into one’s heart through music” (https://www.vop.co.kr/A00001110368.html). Michel Legrand has produced great body of works with French New Wave director Jacques Demy and has left us with memorable songs like “I Will Wait For You”, “The Windmills of Your Mind”, and “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?”. All of these songs are distinct with its melodies, and one can really feel the “French” style in the music. Buyoung Lee’s album includes 8 of his songs in unique trio formation – guitar, clarinet/saxophone and vocal. This simple yet open form allows the audience to really take a deep breath into the music, almost like going for a long walk into the dense, thick meadows into world of Michel Legrand. As we celebrate 140 years of diplomatic relationship between France-Korea, we also celebrate rich musical heritage made by Michel Legrand (1932~2019) as we celebrate 94th anniversary of his birth.

Unique acoustic jazz trio with perfect balance
Buyoung Lee trio is known for their ensemble that shows perfectly balanced music both artistically and technically. Each artist holds their own weight equally and creates a music that interweaves with no one element standing over the other. With guitar as the basic ground and sound of clarinet and saxophone as the sky, what remains in between is sound of Buyoung Lee’s voice that fills the air like the wind. Their “Songs of Michel Legrand” album has been recorded in 2016, exactly 10 years ago and was released in January of 2017. This remarkable album marks 10-year anniversary this year and there are still many critics and jazz enthusiasts who would comment that this is one of her best works to date. What is special about this album is that it was recorded at Audioguy studio and has a great sense and depth of acoustic sound. Audience will be able to experience similar acoustic qualities in live concert by being in the same space as where this album was recorded. Buyoung Lee has been often called as “Impressionist” of jazz vocal music. Their music will leave you strong images and impressions in listener’s mind as the canvas while notes and lyrics work like pastel colors. The unique formation of their instrumentation (vocal-guitar-wind instrument) also invites listeners to be more open with their interpretation of music as it allows for longer solos and open space for expression. Experience the magic of Michel Legrand through this remarkable trio and celebrate France-Korea relations.
