Celebrating the music of Barbara
In celebration of 140th anniversary of France-Korea diplomatic relationship, this concert aims to commemorate one of the most remarkable chanson singers of our time and one of the most important artists who shaped modern day French popular music – Barbara. She may be well-known to French audiences, but for Korean audience she’s still a name that doesn’t sound too familiar. To introduce essence of Barbara’s music, and at the same time bring out the beautiful and lyrical melodic element in her music, we found the just right artist who could do justice to Barbara’s music.
Da:um is a Korean pianist who have studied in France for over 9 years. In her own compositions, listeners come to appreciate her lyricism and beautiful yet simple melodies, and it feels obvious that her life as a Parisian for over 9 years have influence her style of music and audience can also experience her strong background in classical music, which we often call it “European style jazz”. Da:um and her trio’s sensitive and modern approach to Barbara’s music will bring out unique sophistication and make her muic more easily and readily accessible to Korean audience.
Music composed by Daum and sharing her experience
Pianist/composer Daum went to Paris France in 2009 to gain more experience and insight into French culture as a musician. In 2018 she has recorded her first album “Introvertie” which has been regarded as one of the best albums to come out that year by Korean jazz artists. She has been advocating French music and culture throughout her compositions, and with this upcoming concert, she will not only share her interpretation of Barbara’s songs, but she will also play some of her original compositions. She always has paid tribute to great French composers like Ravel, Debussy and Faure and she will conduct her concert in a way that explains her influences from these French artists.

[Artist biography]
♪ Daum (pianist/composer)
Passionate about music ever since she was a little girl, Da:um began piano studies at age 4 and violin studies at age 6. She entered Seoul Arts High School to pursue a career in music. Not long after graduating from Ewha Woman’s University where she studied harmony and composition to become a composer and an interpreter, she felt discouraged by the challenges as a composer in expressing the performer’s feelings and emotions on scores. The encounter with jazz music was a memorable moment in her music life. She realized that Jazz allowed her to lower the barrier between the composer and the performer, and even to go further through several musical genres.
Da:um went to Paris, France in 2009 to gain more performing experiences and to further strengthen her musical talents as a jazz musician, especially as a pianist. For 9 years in France, she focused on having an identity and a philosophy in her music, and on finding the balance between music and life as well. In 2018, she recorded her first album, inspired by Baroque and Renaissance music that she had an opportunity to study in France.
